Things to do in Taipei, Taiwan, Asia, world's most popular cities, most visited cities

Taipei, the capital city Taiwan, is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in Asia. Perched on the north tip of the lush island country, it truly has something for everyone – whether you’re after nature, shopping, food, culture, history, nightlife… you name it.

In a city as exciting as Taipei, you can really do no wrong when it comes to exploring. There is just so much to see and do. That said, there are a few sites that are absolutely worth checking out right away.

Here are five of our favorite things to do in Taipei!

Visit Shilin Night Market

Situated along the Tamsui-Xinyi metro line, Shilin Night Market is the best-known of Taipei’s night markets – and for good reason. The market is huge, and it’s packed to the edges with delicious food, awesome clothing, gift shops, and more. I will never forget the first night that I explored it. It had just rained, and the kaleidoscope of lights flickered off the pavement. The air was cool, which made the piping bowl of beef noodle soup I ordered downstairs taste that much better.

Climb Elephant Mountain

Accessible via the Tamsui-Xinyi metro line, Elephant Mountain rises up in the southeast corner of Taipei. The lush, broccoli-dense forest that covers it is criss-crossed by beautiful hiking trails, which ultimately lead to one of the city’s very best views. Be warned, though, this is not an easy hike. I first attempted it on a blazing hot afternoon… while wearing jeans. Though I’d like to think I’m in half-decent shape, I thought I was going to die by the time I reached the vista atop the mountain. Thankfully, the view was very much worth the climb.

Explore Yangmingshan National Park

Yangmingshan is one of nine beautiful national parks located in Taiwan, and it is located just north of Taipei and New Taipei City. You’ll find a lot of amazing things inside the park, most notably: cherry blossoms, hot springs, sulfur deposits, gaping fumaroles, and some awesome hiking trails – including one that winds up Seven Star Mountain, a dormant volcano. Just be on the lookout for venomous snakes while exploring the park.

Visit Taipei 101

Taipei 101 is far and away the most visible architectural feature of Taiwan. It is a shimmering spire of blue glass the spikes up from the heart of the city, 508 metres into the sky. To explore Taipei 101, simply hop on the Tamsui-Xinyi metro line, and get off at the aptly named Taipei 101 station. There you can enjoy some fantastic shopping, and of course, some incredible views.

Check out Ximending

Ximending is a neighbourhood located in Taipei’s bustling Wanhua District. As the photo above suggests, it is a wonderland of lights, shopping and food, and an attraction very much worth exploring. Accessible via the Tamsui-Xinyi line and the Bannan Line, Ximending is also very easy to find.
