Having been heavily influenced by the Chinese, the Japanese, the Spanish and the French over the course of its history, Taiwan is home to some truly incredible dishes. From its traditional beef noodle soup, to its savoury oyster omelettes, to the many strange and delicious snacks you’ll find in its minimarts, this is a country that will never stop thrilling your tastebuds.
Taiwan is also home to a toilet-themed restaurant. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. While Taiwan is a country with the kind of culinary circuit that will impress even the most particular palates, its also a country that knows how to have fun with food. There is no better evidence of this fact than the aforementioned toilet-themed restaurant, Modern Toilet.
With two locations in Taipei, and one in Taichung, Modern Toilet is an incredibly popular destination in Taiwan. Considering all of food is served in toilet-shaped dishes, and most of it is prepared to resemble a rather unhealthy bowel movement, this is somewhat surprising, but somehow it works – probably because it’s all in good fun.
On the Modern Toilet menu, you will find dozens of delectable dishes, ranging from Korean hot pot dishes to Italian-style pasta. All of these meals are plated in miniature toilets and urinals. The restaurant also serves ice cream, which is where they really drive home their bathroom theme. You can probably imagine how this ice cream is served. If not, check out the picture below:
Here’s a quick rundown on the Modern Toilet history, via the about page on the restaurant’s official website.
“It all started when one of us was reading the manga, Dr. Slump on the toilet and the rest is history. In the beginning, we mainly sold ice cream and a big pile of chocolate ice cream sold in containers shaped like a squat toilet. This humorous spin became a great success. After much planning from all of our partners, we finally took the first step towards realizing our dreams in May 2004 with the launch of the restaurant. The restaurant immediately caused a stir in Taiwan with its humorous out-there design. At the start, many people peered in at the restaurant trying to figure out what we were selling, then had a big smile on their face when they finally worked it out. By continuing to come up with great ideas and making improvements on old ones, we have expanded over the past few years from just ice cream into a fully-fledged theme restaurant with stores all over Taiwan. Our stores have also won the support of devoted fans as well.”
So, will you be eating sh*t at the Modern Toilet restaurant when you visit Taiwan?
