A good movie (or TV show) can trigger extremely powerful emotions in viewers. They can make us laugh uncontrollably, they can make us cry, they can scare the shit out of us…

Movies can also thrust our wanderlust into overdrive. Truly, there is nothing like a well-shot movie, set in a faraway place, to make you want to quit your 9-5 job and take off to see the world.

Here are a few of our favorite Wanderlust-triggering movies.

1. Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation

This 2003 Sofia Coppola film, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Anna Farris and Giovanni Ribisi, is one of the best travel movies ever. In fact, it might be one of the best movies ever, outright.

The film tells the story of a jaded movie star and a glum young woman who meet by chance at a hotel in glimmering Tokyo. Though they initially want to leave the country – “I’m trying to organize a prison break” – they eventually come to love it, and develop an unforgettable friendship along the way.

Well-written, beautifully shot, fantastically acted, and sweetened by an amazing, shoegaze-heavy soundtrack, this is a film that any traveler will love.

2. Into the Wild

Do you ever feel like selling everything you own, quitting your job, hitchhiking as far into the wilderness as you can, and living off the land? In other words, making a total and complete escape from society?

Well, that’s exactly what Chris McCandless did back in the 90s.

The film Into the Wild, which is directed by Sean Penn and stars Emile Hirsch, recounts the incredible adventure of McCandless as he hitch hikes and train-hops across America, and eventually sets up camp in the rugged wild of Alaska.

If this movie doesn’t make you want to take off, I don’t know what will.

3. The Darjeeling Limited

This is the most light-hearted of the films on this list, but don’t let that fool you. The Darjeeling Limited will stir up your wanderlust like you won’t believe.

Starring Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and directed by the veritable masterpiece-generator Wes Anderson, this film follows three zany brothers on an incredible train ride across India. The cinematography is exceptional, the dialogue is hilarious, and the music is great.

This film will make you long for the muggy air of India like you won’t believe. Watch at your peril.
