Okay, perhaps part of me is still six years old and obsessed with being a princess dressed in pink and purple, or perhaps it s my return to ballet class for the first time since my teens, but I was instantly drawn to the charming cover art and snapped this one of the New Books shelf at the library The story itself was a rather ho hum retelling of the story of Sleeping Beauty and it is through the illustrations that we see it is the Tchaikovsky ballet version complete with Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel at the wedding celebration I think the illustrations are cute and will totally appeal to little ballerinas and princesses, but I just wanted something from the text The words captured none of the romance and magic of the ballet There is a brief historical note at the end explaining the origin of Tchaikovsky s ballet.

Ella Bella loved her ballet lessons with Madame Rosa, at the Old Theater She particularly loved it when the pupils were allowed to dance about to the music from Miss Rosa s beautiful music box Staying after class one day, Ella Bella listens once again to her teacher s music box, which is playing the music from The Sleeping Beauty, and suddenly the Lilac Fairy appears and escorts her into the world of the fairy tale balletThe first of six picture book from British author illustrator James Mayhew devoted to the magical ballet related adventures of this little ballerina, Ella Bella Ballerina and The Sleeping Beauty is the fifth that I have read Once upon a time I was scrupulous about reading series in order, but these days, especially with picture books, I go with what s available to me I found this to be quite a sweet book, pairing an engaging and magical story with appealing artwork I think this entire series makes a wonderful introduction to the stories to be found in famous ballets, and would pair very nicely with other series, such as the Tallulah books Tallulah s Tutu , etc , which chronicle the actual dance related experiences of a young ballet pupil Recommended to young would be ballerinas and ballet lovers.

Rachel Isadora has done some outstanding books featuring ballet for little girls And there s nice ones by Patricia Lee Gauch, Aliki Brandenberg, and Peter Sis For cripes sake, even Angelina Ballerina, cutesy wutsey as it is, has actual BALLET in it Not this one Not so much as a plie in this one or in its companion,Ella Bella Ballerina and CinderellaThere s a nice enough retelling of the ballet s story, there s lots of pink and purple and a little girl in ballet clothes and a princess.Fine for little girls who like princesses and such But for little girls and big ones like me who dance, look elsewhere for ballet stories.

Miss 4 loves this series of books She remembers too that the Lilac Fairy should have friends I think the 4 seasons are in the Nutcracker.Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes We try to get different ones out every week or so it s fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new favourite authors.

Kauniisti kuvitettu taianomainen kuvakirja balettia harrastavasta Ellasta, joka tempautuu Prinsessa Ruususen balettiin mukaan t ysin tossuin Taianomaisesta soittorasiasta tuleva melodia tempaa Ellan Lila haltiattaren mukaan.

I really liked the illustations in this book The people were soft and wispy The hues were shades of pink and purple with splashes of other colors It was pretty entertaining, but not one of the best retellings I ve read I think little girls who love princess stories and ballerinas might enjoy this book Taken from my book reviews blog
